Synopsis :

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth is a story set in Eastern Europe in the 15th century. Rafal, a brilliant young man in search of knowledge, meets Hubert, a scholar considered a repentant heretic by the Church, just before entering university.

This encounter allows him to discover the beginnings of the heliocentric theory, according to which the Earth revolves around the Sun, contradicting the Church’s theory that the cosmos, and therefore the Sun, revolves around the Earth.

Following this discovery, Rafal embarks on a quest for knowledge fraught with pitfalls to discover the truth about the world.

Highlights:

  • Engrossing story, full of twists and turns
  • Good explanation of complex technical points
  • Very good characters who complement each other well
  • Nice character development
  • Well-placed historical details
  • Smooth animation during epic scenes
  • Very good Japanese voice acting

Negative points:

  • An anime that is too short, rushed at the end
  • Some points in the story that deserve more attention
  • A fade-to-black ending that is a little cheap.

My opinion:

A great anime to watch, go for it, you won’t be disappointed!

Although this anime is fast-paced with only 25 episodes, it manages to introduce us to a whole theory and the battle that generations are willing to fight to discover the truth. The story focuses on several protagonists who all have very different personalities, some with noble ideals and others who are completely selfish, willing to do anything to learn more and prove their theory. The antagonist is also very well constructed in the character of Nowak, who already has a strong identity when he first appears and only develops further as the episodes progress. The characterization of the Church’s dogma through the Inquisition and faith is also very well presented and avoids the shortcuts often taken by series.

The anime is also well paced, there’s no time to get bored and the elements don’t seem particularly rushed (although I did find the ending a bit quick). The animation is good, without being the best, the movements are beautiful and fluid, and the fight scenes are also very beautiful while remaining realistic.

As a practitioner of HEMA, I was also very happy to see historical guards and movements in the characters’ fencing, which shows a real attention to detail.
